What You Need Before You Start
Before any of this works, you need the right hardware. Trying to set up tubeless on a rim and tire that aren't built for it is the single biggest reason people give up on it.
- A tubeless-ready or tubeless-compatible rim. Check your rim spec; not every rim seals up without help, and hookless rims have their own tire-compatibility rules worth double-checking.
- Tubeless rim tape, if your wheels don't already have it factory-installed. It has to fully cover the spoke bed with no wrinkles or gaps, or air will find its way out through the spoke holes.
- A tubeless valve with a removable core and a rubber grommet that seats flush against the rim.
- Sealant. Don't skip this step or try to run it dry; sealant does the puncture-sealing work.

How to Set Up Tubeless Tires, Step by Step

- Install the valve. Push it through the rim, tighten the lockring by hand until the rubber grommet seats flush and airtight. Don't overtighten; snug is enough.
- Mount the first bead. Work one side of the tire fully onto the rim, starting opposite the valve and working toward it.
- Pour in the sealant. With the second bead still about three-quarters unmounted, pour your sealant directly into the open gap in the tire, then finish working the last stretch of bead onto the rim by hand.
- Seat the bead. Using a high-volume pump, compressor, or tubeless inflator, inflate quickly. You'll hear a series of pops as the bead snaps into its seated position on both sides. This is the step that trips people up most; a slow trickle of air from a standard hand pump usually won't get there.
