Bead

The reinforced edge of a bicycle tire that locks the tire to the rim. The bead runs in a continuous loop along both inner edges of the tire and fits into the rim’s bead seat, holding the tire securely when inflated. Beads are usually made from steel wire (durable, more rigid) or Kevlar®/aramid fiber (lighter, foldable). A proper bead fit is essential for safety and performance.

Casing

The underlying fabric structure of the tire that provides shape, flexibility, and strength. Casing is made from woven threads coated with rubber. It works with the tread and sidewall to determine durability, weight, and ride feel.

Sidewall

The smooth outer section of the tire between the tread and the bead. The sidewall protects the casing and often displays tire specifications such as size, recommended pressure, and model. Sidewall thickness and construction affect ride quality, weight, and puncture resistance.

Tread

The patterned outer surface of the tire that makes contact with the ground. Tread designs vary by terrain and riding style, from smooth patterns for low rolling resistance to aggressive knobs for grip in loose or muddy conditions.

TPI (Threads Per Inch)

A measurement of the density of threads in a tire’s casing. TPI is one of the key factors in balancing performance and durability for different riding styles.

• High TPI (e.g., 120+): More threads, thinner threads — creates a lighter, more supple, and flexible tire with improved ride feel but less puncture resistance.

• Low TPI (e.g., 30–60): Fewer threads, thicker threads — produces a heavier, stiffer tire that is more durable and resistant to cuts.

Tubeless vs. Tube-Type Tires

• Tube-Type: Uses an inner tube to hold air pressure. The bead’s role is mainly to keep the tire stable and centered on the rim.

• Tubeless: Holds air directly within the tire and rim system, eliminating the inner tube. The bead must form an airtight seal with the rim, making bead precision and rim compatibility critical. Tubeless systems often use sealant to help maintain air pressure and prevent punctures.
